My girlfriend and I had a fabulous time here last night. We ordered a charcuterie board, crispy cauliflower and a tune and avacado dish that was absolutely to die for. Servous was excellent and live music was an absolute bonus. We'll be back!

  • *****

The drink was great as well as the Fries.
The Sandwich was OK . But looks like drink and snack is more popular here.

We sat on the patio which is dog friendly.

Overall a good experience for this neighborhood.

    Tylers CallMeTerry is excellent!

Great selection and they can make bouquets for you! A little bit expensive in my opinion and the tulips could have looked healthier but really cute flower shop nonetheless :))

  • *****

Cozy, comfy, good beer, good food. Best mussels aboot.

Wonderful Valentines Day menu with great service and beautiful food!

  • *****

Nice vibe. Sat at the bar and played a couple games of crib while enjoying the food, bevies and tunes. Tyler behind the bar provided great service and was a pleasure to chat with. Lighting was great making for a warm environment. Definitely recommend Ellis for an enjoyable night out.

Visiting Vancouver for the first time and stumbled into The Ellis for a drink and stayed for quite a while because the bartender and vibes were so good. Highly recommend

  • *****

I had the wings, I dam near grew wings because of how good it was.

  • *****

October 2023 the burger is the best burger in town and you can have it cooked medium rare. Fries are so good I ordered a side after my meal.

  • *****

The Chicken burger was just what the Dr. Ordered. The medium rare beef burger was juicy and succulent. Music was good. Good atmosphere for a Monday night. Servers were attentive but not over the top. Definitely recommend and will be back ourselves.

  • *****

We came for the cocktails, which were delicious and creative. Havent tried the food. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful

  • *****

Really enjoyed my Farmers hash! Yummy!

Great experience. Taste burger, chicken sandwich and Mussels. Service staff were very accommodating.

  • *****

Good choice for brunch and after work drink specials. Good selection of food and drinks

  • *****

Would definitely recommend this spot for its amazing cocktails and shareable food items! Everything was amazing and the service was incredible! Shoutout to Tyler at the bar for taking such good care of us!

  • *****

Great location in Kits to enjoy this pub-style restaurant. Limited but beautiful patio tables facing a quiet street. I dropped a star for food because our Ellis burgers could have used more seasoning in the patty to mask the meaty flavour.

  • *****

Delicious cocktails, and I highly recommend the Burrata and Beets salad.

  • *****

Such good food! We stopped by late evening because we were looking for a place to eat as visitors from the East Coast! Such delicious appetizers, vegetarian friendly options for folks in our group! Server was EXTREMELY polite! Would recomend!

  • *****

We came in here at 10pm after our 8 hour flight and everything was phenomenal. The staff are extremely kind and the food comes out fast and it is delicious!

  • *****

Amazing service and food!! Everything was well portioned. We went late at night and the patio had a great vibe. Highly recommend!

  • *****

What a great find in Kitsilano much better than the crowded Local a street away. The food is great and the staff friendly!

  • *****

Second time here and both visits have been great. The food is excellent and the service is outstanding. Highly recommend.

  • *****

My family and I went a few days ago, and we had a nice time. I got the bacon avocado toast, and the eggs were yummy, and the avocado tasted fresh. We had a very kind waiter and we got seated almost immediately. Great service, good food, and a nice place. Although, the toilet seat in the men's washroom didn't even fit the toilet size, and it was very dark in the corridor to the washrooms. 8/10, would go again.

  • *****

love this place, bartenders are cool and i have a lil crush on one of the waitresses and their avocados are always perfectly ripe mama mia what a spot

  • *****

    Love the Ellis, amazing cocktails!

  • *****

Came here for happy hour and tried all the food items available. The shishito peppers were my favourite. Bread was also good and curried butter unique.

Great cocktail menu selection and fairly large patio for restaurants in the area. It was excellent weather so the restaurant was pretty empty as everyone wanted to be on the patio.

  • *****

    so good

I like the music the drink and everything here

  • *****

Great meal, great vibe, great service. Garden burger hit the spot (which, for a veggie burger, is no small feat). Delicious selection of craft beers, poured up by Tyler at the bar who immediately made me feel welcome. Highly recommend to anyone in Kits!

  • *****

Great cocktail and nice staff !

  • *****

Was most quite than most of the other restaurants on kits. Got a table right away and ordered a few appetizers. Their $7 fries were burnt and only came with mayo. Their wings were a bit more soggy than crispy but the beef carpaccio was phenomenal.

  • *****

The hot chicken burger is amazing!

  • *****

Iet with a friend and had a burger, it was fantastic! The drinks were mediocre, especially for the price. Service is friendly, but not the quickest.

  • *****

Nice vibes and great services. However, mussels weren't fresh and underseasoning and the beef burger patty was lack of seasonings too. Brioche burger bun was milky and soft. Anyway, a good place if you visit Kits.

  • *****

Cozy restaurant close to the beach. Good service!

  • *****

Not gonna lie, the comment about I dont usually like pubs because theyre not cute comment almost made me not come here. Because being cute is about as shallow and irrelevant as something on earth can be. But its an ok pub. Please dont make pubs cute we have bubble waffle brunch hell for that.

  • *****

Went there for Sunday brunch with some friends. The food took super long to come and there was only one server for the entire place, so naturally the service as super slow. Food was decent.

  • *****

Best cocktails, great burgers ans food.

  • *****

A little slow on the service last night. Drinks came out haphazardly for our group, leaving everyone waiting and ice melting for those who had their drinks. (Ellis, do the whole tables drink order before making other table orders).
Ellis burger was recommended, split it and shares the Buffalo chicken burger. The buffalo chicken burger was delicious (Ellis burger was good too - I'd recommend the chicken burger - great flavours, crispy outside, tender inside.
    Fries are amazing .
Drinks are good. So glad to see a proper whiskey rock in the drinks.
    I'll be back again.

  • *****

I love this pub. I usually dont like pubs because theyre usually not cute but this one is. Service is also very friendly. We always have a good time here.

  • *****

Came for a date night - ambiance was cool, elevated pub style. Nice server. Excellent burgers, especially with beef cooked to your preference. No complaints really!

  • *****

The service was great, they really took the time to explain especially when we were there for the first time. I felt like the food was fresh, but not super flavorful, good for people who dont like too much salt.

  • *****

What a cute vibe. Great cocktails !! And delicious beef Carpaccio.

Nice little restaurant off Yew in Kits. Seevice and food were great, beats a lot of the other places in the vicinity. Can't beat Kits Beer selection! Nice music as well.

  • *****

Mushroom risotto was very good. Loved their big booth in the back for small groups. Super comfy.

  • *****

This spot is definitely a hidden gem in kits. It always has seating available and the food is not what youd expect (it isnt basic bar food, they have more sophisticated dishes too).

But regarding the basics, the burger is spectacular, they make their own high quality ground beef. The drinks are good, and each time Ive gone the servers have been very nice. I wish the burger was a bit bigger, but its definitely quality over quality . The fried chicken sandwich is awesome too.

  • *****

    Lovely food and staff

  • *****

Food was phenomenal. It was not busy.

  • *****

Super forthcoming and friendly staff, food checks out aswell, but nothing special.

  • *****

    Great Brunch place!

  • *****

We frequent this place for drinks and love it. The cocktail list changes often so theres always something new to try. Last night we took some guests here to try the food and everything was delicious. Two of us had the salmon, one had the Ellis burger and the other had the octopus. I loved the sauce with the salmon, it was a nice well-rounded dinner plate. The service was also great - our server explained how the chefs prepare the food and was super knowledgeable. Overall a great experience and well definitely be back for dinner.

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to see they had reopened brunch! Our food was delicious and the service was great! We'll definitely be eating here again.

  • *****

Absolutely love the Ellis for brunch. My friends and I go all the time and the food is amazing. Recently tried out their happy hour, which was also excellent. Lovely staff, delicious food, great ambiance.

  • *****

    The Ellis is always good.

  • *****

I just recently re-discovered this local gem. Went in on the weekend and sampled almost the entire cocktail menu (and delicious mussels) and went right back the next day for lunch. A highlight was, not only the amazing cocktails, but also the outstanding, 5-star service of bartender Maddy (Matty?). We experienced extremely attentive and polished customer service from him while seated at the bar, which was unexpected considering the more casual atmosphere of the place. Excellence is the word that comes to mind. Thank you, Maddy!

  • *****

Incredible service, food, and atmosphere. My new go to spot!!

  • *****

Loved the menu and the cozy atmosphere and wait staff were very friendly.

  • *****

Our familys favourite spot! Its great for a date night in the evening or an after spot to hit with our toddler after a day at the beach. Always great service and consistently quality food. The Ellis Burger is SO good. Great selection of local craft beer too.

  • *****

Just a fantastic experience. The food was amazing and the cocktails that the bartender came up with were great. I tried several and was never disappointed. Highly recommend this location for service and drinks!

  • *****

The food is phenomenal. Everything they do there, they do right! The drinks are on point. You wont be disappointed

The servers there are amazing! Such great people and Lauren is such a kind and personable person.

One of the best bars/restaurants in Kitsilano! Amazing place

  • *****

I dont eat a lot of meat, but when I do, I go for an Ellis burger! These folks make the best burger Ive had in Vancouver, and theyre one of the only spots licensed to serve it medium rare.

The service is always friendly and excellent, and the patio is perfect. My friends say the cocktails are pretty spectacular, too!

  • *****

    Good service and espresso martinis.

  • *****

One of my favourite spots in Vancouver. The owner Kevin is top notch person. The burger is amazing, also a big fan of the ribs. The Ellis has a great atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • *****

The octopus was very nice, the cocktails were original, and service was superb!

  • *****

This is the only place on Yew St where you can get an espresso martini. Enough said! Its top notch. Would highly recommend this spot to start your weekly Yew street crawl..

  • *****

    Did you know??
They make their ingredients for all dishes from scratch!!!
Yes, I aint exaggerating. Everything is house made & fresh
I ate a mid-rare burger, my friend had an amazing salad.

Love this place. We attend post a swim at Kits pool. Happy hour has $5.50 craft beers and lots of excellent food at great prices. Happy hour 4-6pm M-T and moves to 3-5pm on the other days. Keep this in mind. The staff are very friendly. Great to sit on the patio and watch the world walk by.

  • *****

Really nice patio at this time of year

  • *****

Delicious Thai curry mussels and cocktails, amazing staff too! A hidden gem.

  • *****

Kale salad was incredible, burger was top notch. Service was on point, could see her smile through her mask. Felt very comfortable. Will absolutely go again!

  • *****

Great food. Great staff. Great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

  • *****

Great local restaurant with super friendly staff.

  • *****

Absolutely excellent cocktails. Obviously couldn't have them all, but the Acadia Driftwood was extremely smooth and such a wonderful mix of flavours, it very may well have just ruined all other bourbon drinks for me. As someone who isn't a traditional fan of Negroni's, I really enjoyed their take on the classic.
"The Ellis Burger" is advertised as one of the few in Vancouver that is licensed to serve as medium-rare. While it wasn't as pink as expected, it was packed with flavour and the fries are top notch!

  • *****

    Delicious burgers, patties made in-house!

  • *****

Really great brunch. Friendly service and house hot sauce.

  • *****

Staff was super friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. I had a concern with a dish and they attended to the concern right away.

  • *****

Great restaurant with a cozy heated patio area. Staff were very friendly!

  • *****

Best cocktails in the city. Mezcal Martinez every time.

  • *****

Superb food and service. The "bone-in beef rib burger" is AMAZING. Medium rare, cooked to perfection, you easily slide the bone out. The cheese, the level of moisture of the bread, and even the side salad (great tip from our server)... all great!

The lava cake is definitely one of the best I've ever had. Lava cakes are simple but so difficult to get right! Yet, this absolutely raised the bar for me.

    This place is a gem.

  • *****

    Great place to eat!
The cocktails are great, food was really yummy!
The servers were very nice gave us great suggestions!
The Ellis Burger is a must try!

Loved the ambience of the place, old time pub looks, good music, and soccer in the T.V. Good portions of tasty food. The beef brisket sandwich is a favorite. We scoffed it all down.
A special mention, Jarvis is an amazing host. He took care of us well. Very attentive, and quick, even though he was taking care of other guest's.

Love The Ellis! Delicious, scratch made food. The burgers are delicious. The cocktails are divine- try the Lady Grey. Always good experiences with the employees. As of oct 2021 they have a covered, heated patio as well as a parklet patio with picnic tables. They usually have the game (whoever is playing locally or NFL) on the TVs by the bar. Not overly noisy.

  • *****

The Ellis is our go to for date night and entertaining!
The Lady Grey is THE reason I keep coming back, that and the mussels perfect cocktails, amazing food, fantastic service and beautiful ambiance... what more could you ask for in Kitsilano

  • *****

Amazing quality of service and food. Felt completely taken care of and had an amazing experience

  • *****

Aside from the rather slow time that it took for our food to come out (think they might have been short staffed at the time), the food was quite good here.

Had the Ellis Breakfast and the Farmers Hash. The country sausages had a nice snappy bite and the top of the buttermilk biscuits had a perfect crumbly texture.

Service was friendly and retro music vibes worked for a relaxing brunch.

  • *****

Very glad to have stumbled upon this place. The atmosphere was great, intimate but still busy. Food was delicious (& we ate quite a bit , only suggestion would be to serve the lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream ). They have a good cocktail & local wine list. Also had great service (very attentive & knowledgeable). 100% will be back with friends.

  • *****

really amazing and speedy food delivery and great service and ive only been here for 20 mins xo thank you

  • *****

Hidden gem - fine food disguised as a pub. They nail the more complex entrees just as well as the casual fare. Spacious room with nice vibes, works equally for a date or grabbing a pint. Great summer patio setting too.

  • *****

We stumbled across this place and I'm so glad! The appetizers we had were great. Can't wait to come back for a full meal

Great-tasting food, well--curated selection of cocktails. Incredible date ambiance (at least for Valentine's Day).

My only concern, if anything, was two times the server was not informed well enough about the menu. First time, we asked what the pasta was and she had to go back and ask. Not a big deal, not in a rush obviously but it speaks to staff's knowledge and perception by customers. Second time, asked about the white wine blend and what blend it was. Again, she was not sure. Maybe a bit more training and briefing helps give the overall impression.

  • *****

Tucked away out of view. Keep it a secret because i like to get a seat when I go.

But its great. The food, environment, service and shuffle board.

  • *****

We went there for brunch on Sunday. It was amazing!! I liked the atmosphere as well. That was a nice spot to start my Sunday. Will go there again for dinner. Menu looks good!!

  • *****

The burger is sooo too good, I am too stub to speak

  • *****

Not many vegan options which is unusual for any restaurant in Vancouver, but that might have been because it was the brunch menu. They had to edit the veggie burger recipe to use lettuce instead of a bun (I'm guessing there's butter on the bun or something?) But it was SO GOOD. Really damn good burger. Also an amazing latte as well, little expensive though.

4 stars because it would have been nice for more vegan options, but the one I had was waaaaay too good

  • *****

    Delicious food, friendly ambience

  • *****

No need to line up for an hour at hipster places on 4th Ave when you can walk right in for an amazing brunch at The Ellis. Friendly service, relaxed ambiance, great food. Try it for yourself.

  • *****

Fun place. Good selection. Likely go back again.

  • *****

This place was sooo good. The food was amazing! Everything is made from scratch here and you can taste the difference. French mussels was soo good! Our party had all different things and everyone was super happy with their meal.

Lovely room, good service, we had happy hour nibbles and the chipotle skewer was very tasty, charcuterie plate not so much. Main course we had from regular member and the Brisket Sandwich gets a star on its own. Exceptional.

  • *****

We came for the burgers which were okay but not worth the price. Found them more dry than expected and not medium rare. The bone-in rib was dry and I had expected an easier experience (if it easily fell off the bone it would have been enjoyable, but had to separate it and it was difficult to cut). Charcuterie was good quality, crispy cauliflower was great.

Service-wise was incredibly variable, the blonde server was warm and lovely and made our meal, others I found cold and polite in a Vancouver way. I wouldnt return as the value was lacking and the burgers were a disappointment, but could be a fun date night for some types of people.

The Ellis is a great local Kitsilano gastro pub. They have a loyal clientele which is a sign of a great business - local support. I love to support small businesses, and The Ellis has a good equation. They have an ample selection of micro-brewery beers on tap and wines by the glass. Their food menu is also fantastic! My daughter and I first went there for burgers a few years ago; The Ellis burger is still her favorite, but my wife and I are particularly fond of the grilled octopus. If you're looking for a place for that intimate neighborhood feel with excellent choices for food and drink, visit The Ellis.

One of the most underrated, best bars/restaurants in Kitsilano.

A brilliant neighbourhood gastropub. Great food, interesting beers on the rotating tap, outstanding service, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The menu is not extensive, but everything is super fresh and tasty. The daily specials are definitely worth checking out. The Friday special fried chicken is amazing, as are the hickory smoked ribs and the weekend brunch menu. The atmosphere is laid back and the clientele is quite varied, so everyone will feel comfortable here. A very welcome, laid back alternative to the frenzied Kitsilano scene.

First time at The Ellis on July 20th. It was to celebrate a good friend's 60th birthday. The venue was perfect for a summer evening celebration. Good outdoor patio, good food and even better service. Both Joe and Michael were both accommodating and pleasant to deal with. I now know why our friends go there just about weekly. I would be going again in the future.

  • *****

Great service from Michael. Food was good too

  • *****

Great service and a really nice street-front patio. They are taking Covid safety measures seriously which is great to see. Food is delicious, you have to try the fried cauliflower.

  • *****

Well, I give full marks to the staff for taking care of their patrons during this Covid nastiness by not serving me, in a polite way. I was perhaps socializing ( and not social distancing) during inebriated smoke breaks. So kudos and thanks...

  • *****

great brunch. try the fried chicken and french toast. needs more chili oil tho.

  • *****

Went to that place two weekends in a row. I live not too far and really like that place and the neighborhood. The outdoor patio is very pleasant and the street is quiet (no traffic). I had the octopus and the mussels and both were delicious! My partner and my friend had the burger and said it was very good too! They mostly have local fresh products which I love! Will go back soon :)

  • *****

Great service and delicious cocktails. With a happy ending.

Enjoyable large pub like setting, visited with friends during happy hour. Decent selection and nibbling food, range of alcoholic beverages also.

Staff were polite and attentive to our table, prices were okay.

The establishment was clean and tidy when we visited and the outdoor area was also a nice addition!

  • *****

Delicious food! Great cocktails and good beer selection. Friendly staff and a cool vibe. Small outdoor patio for those stressed about COVID and good spacing inside. Felt very safe. We will be back.

  • *****

Perfect meal to end off a day at the beach! My friend & I got the Veggie Burger and the Ellis Burger. Loved the perfect bun and the salad that came with it! Unpictured but I would not recommend the crispy cauliflower...wasnt worth the $14 in my opinion. Maybe it was due to lack of dressing!
Overall staff and food were great! Thank you Ellis on Kits :)

Great food, great service, great music... it was just great!

  • *****

The Ellis is my neighbourhood go-to, its hands down one of the best spots in all of Kits! Everything is made in-house and you can tell, whether you are having Brunch or Dinner.

I had the Wild Salmon this night, but I usually have their Red Thai Chili Mussels & Fries or a Burger. It's all delicious.

I am lucky to have them in my bubble.

  • *****

Everything here was top-notch. Firstly, our server, Shaughnessy, did an awesome job educating us on their menu and accommodating our requests (thank you, Shaughnessy)! Secondly, their food and drink was amazing. We ordered the classic french mussels, grilled octopus, and bone in beef rib burger, each very well executed - you could taste the high level of quality and care they put into their food (the bone in beef rib burger is a showstopper)! We also thought that their cocktails were well done and well priced. Thirdly, the atmosphere and decor make you feel like you're somewhere special. The Ellis is truly a gem in the Kits Beach neighbourhood!

Great service, definitely recommend it. Katie was so professional and kind

Located in one of the streets of Kitsilano, Ellis has a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Totally, the taste of all the brunchs was good and the staff were supportive.
If you are sensitive to greasy food, you might ask the server to help you on that as Ellis brunch is somehow greasy.

Coffee was good. If you wanna decaf coffee, you have some options in The Ellis too.

  • *****

Best spot in Kits! I'm here weekly for Brunch or Dinner. The burgers, fried chicken, seafood, and country sausage are my favorites - the staff and owner are great too.

  • *****

A nice hole in the wall pub experience, the food and drinks are good with a price you expect for the area.
Quite often less crowded than the terrible hipster joints near by and the staff are always A delight.

  • *****

The Ellis is a great place for drinks and food and exactly what you would hope for. The Gin-gin mule was a great drink and the majority of the food was enjoyable with some items better then others. I enjoyed the Ellis Burger although the toppings could use a little more love as the Patty really stood out while the toppings faded into the background in comparrison. I strongly recommend the salad instead of the fries with the burger as the fries were larger which is not my favourite style and dissapointed some while the salad is excellent.

The Smoked Olives, Chipotle Chicken Skewer, and Bread (yummy butter) were all great. I look forward to going back with friends.

Quaint bar close to the action of Kits - make sure to catch Ellis Hour 3-5pm! Support LOCAL in the purchases you make whether it be drink or food! Nothing beats a community feel bar this close to the beach without it being too hectic!! The staff are very friendly and practice all the safety protocols put in place - cant wait till they get back to normal!

Awesome burger house ground so you can order it less than well done for once! Makes my midwestern heart sing! Delicious house made fries and incredible avocado mescal margarita. Great staff and nice patio.

  • *****

I'm reviewing the food, as I'm not a drinker. My friends who are enjoyed the selection of beers.

I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The salad was better than expected -- quality ingredients (arugula, goat cheese, dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds) and in a reasonable portion. Worth taking over the fries (and I don't say something like that very often). The sandwich was only okay. It was well-executed, but I would have appreciated a slightly larger piece of chicken (it seemed a little small to me for $16). Also, it was NOT spicy to my pallet, which was mildly (pun intended) disappointing.

The vibe inside the restaurant was chill, and our server was wonderfully attentive. We parked for free on the street several blocks away.

I'd probably give 3.5 stars if that were an option; 4 for food quality, venue, and service, 3 for not quite enough meat on the sandwich (a big deal to me).

Bottom line: I'd go back here with friends who want a good selection of beers; it's certainly pleasant. But if I were only going out to eat, I might look elsewhere, as the non-handheld options were... pricey for my budget.

  • *****

I enjoyed this place. It has a small outdoor, and ample indoor seating. On a warm summer day it was quite nice.

The food was tasty and the service more than friendly. The portion sizes were smallish, but the prices not totally unreasonable. My partner loved the bbq sauce and the ribs were nice and tender.

It definitely has an upwardly-mobile hipster feel. But the unnecessarily pretentious and shallow conversation going on next to me was pretty much what I expected given the location and reviews. I won't hold it against the establishment.

I would come again if I did not live in the US.

  • *****

A modern take on the neighbourhood pub. Modern decor, decent menu, good service. It has a patio, which is great for weekend brunch.

  • *****

First time visiting this new-ish neighborhood pub. It's on a quiet street, tucked away beside grocery stores and a quick walk from Kitsilano beach.

This undiscovered gem has a great heated patio, oak-barrel aged Negroni, and a menu that changes seasonally. Happy hour is also great!! The bartender/owner was extremely welcoming and took the time to chat about the menu and asked for feedback.

Please please try the beef tartare (mixed with diced pickles and mustard ), classic mussels, and the watermelon burrata salad. And the beignets for dessert!! Piping hot, right out of the fryer.

    10/10, will definitely return!

  • *****

I just had to come on here to write a review.

An amazing Valentines Day dinner! The Ellis provided a beautiful set menu and also provided their standard menu if you wanted as well. The dinner was absolutely phenomenal and my fiance wanted another order of the beef it was so delicious. To make our night even more memorable was our server. He was so professional, a delight, and he was so funny (Almost rare in Kits). Our server and this restaurant made our evening perfect and one to remember.

    6 out of 5 stars.

  • *****

Great food! Great atmosphere! Highly recommended

  • *****

Great food !- an excellent diverse menu with some multicultural flair. There was something for everyone . We tried appetizers with a middle Eastern flair then went on to a lamb dish which was subtle and perfect for a cold night- but the people next to us had burgers which they said were fantastic - and I can't wait to return to try their buffalo chicken burger and a host of other options- maybe I'll get to the salads which looked amazing

there is an extensive list of cocktails - a few with egg whites for interest - lots of choices for craft beer and some interesting wines-- don't forget the beignets for dessert with 2 of 4 sauces!

Don't let the casual and unassuming decor fool you. Within The Ellis beat the hearts of some genuine foodies.

  • *****

Loved this place, the ambiance is awesome and the beer selection amazing

  • *****

We were looking for a place to eat on a date night and came across this place while heading to a different restaurant in the neighbourhood. Since it didn't look overly crowded we decided to go in.

They had a nice selection of beer and other drinks, and the owner(I believe) was kind enough to bring us sample when we couldn't decide on which beer to get. The food was really good and they had live music which was really nice.

  • *****

It was surprisingly good. My family got the salmon, cod, ribs and octopus - out of all the dishes, we all thought the octopus was their best dish. The octopus was grilled very nicely (chewy and tender). For dessert, we got the beignets with peanut butter and chocolate sauce. It was very good - crunchy, hot and fresh.

  • *****

Friendly, down to earth, wholesome fun time. Oh, good food and great selection on tap, too

  • *****

Definitely a promising first visit! A very nice pub/restaurant, nicely casual but certainly not dumpy, great selection of local BC beer; Twin Sails, Main St. Brewing, Powell Street, East Van Brewing, Talisman, Parkside, and Yellow dog, so already we were off to a good start :-) Friendly and welcoming service and the food was deeeelicious! We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of appies with the intention we'd follow that with a main. Let's just say, the apples were so damn yummy our tastebuds were blown and our stomachs pleasantly full. We shared the spinach & artichoke dip which was honestly the best I've ever had largely because it also has tasty cheese mixed in. Our second appie was the breaded cauliflower and whatever that fabulous sauce is that it's served in. Seriously yummy, you will not be disappointed. I'm already planning a return visit and I know what I'll be ordering :-)

The only 'down' side was that it was a little empty - especially for 8:30 on a Saturday night, but that's what I've come to expect in Kits. People are paying so much to live here, no-one has the money to go out. That said, of the people in there when we arrived, we all stayed a few hours just enjoying hanging out, the atmosphere was very relaxed and the music was good and just the right level to enjoy but still have a conversation. What's more, they only have 2 TVs and only 1 of them was even on - AND they're not ginormous screens. Yay!!!!

I hope it's usually a little busier here some nights because this is a gem within Kitsilano if you ask me and I'd like to see it do well. Our original plan was to have a beer & snack at The Ellis & then head over to try out the bar Corduroy on Cornwall St. but we ended up staying here, so Corduroy will be for another time.

We're starved of decent pubs in Kits (unless you want the full on sports bar, TVs blaring and a crappier beer selection) so I am thrilled to have found a place to return to that's staggering distance from home :-) And just thinking about those appies makes my mouth water.

  • *****

One if the best brunchs of Kits. Been coming here for a while. The place is cute and food delicious . Service is perfect: never too many customers. The Chorizo Hash is to die for. . Don't like waiting in lines for weekend Bruch. This is the place.... so worth it

  • *****

Extremely good service. Me and a girlfriend were hungry after a long walks with the dogs around kits. It's really hard to find places that are dog friendly where you don't just tie your dog up outside while you dine inside. Even though it was a cold night and the patio season is kind of over, they were nice enough to create a space for us out side close to our dogs. They gave so much love to our dogs too . Very attentive servers and accommodated anything we needed and the dogs needs too. The food was about a 7/10, I got the cucumber crunch salad- my only let down was I was expecting a more peanuty taste... my fault not theirs. Over all I would most defiantly go back. So would the dogs.. they loved the French fries.

  • *****

Great service and atmosphere, perfect for a date night!
I had the veggie burger with salad, the portion was certainly generous.
    I will be back Ellis!

  • *****

Awesome food. Yummy cauliflower and fried pickles. Chicken sandwich was also yummy in a perfect soft bun. Live music on Tuesday and Friday. Great place for kits.

  • *****

Very good. We say outside enjoying the cherry blossoms (and kept reasonable warm with an outdoor heater). Ordered the beef dip with chicken gravy poutine, the crunch salad and the salt and peper chicken wings.

Beef dip bread was especially good, but overall a good sandwich.

The chicken gravy poutine was delicious with plenty of cheese curds.

The crunch salad was special with the jicama!

Chicken wings were done great, not too salty or greasy.

Price is reasonable with a range depending on how much you feel like spending (~15-25). Happy hour until 5pm also seems like a good deal!

Update: Don't go for the artichoke dip. Incredibly salty. Inedible.

All in all we will definitely come again and bring friends some friends. The interior has some big group tables, as well as a curling board!

  • *****

Absolutely love the Ellis. Location is amazing, staff is incredibly friendly and the food and beer are delicious. Would highly recommend!

  • *****

The salmon ceviche with plantain chips was so good! Fresh and tangy with their mango and lime salsa. They make homemade sauces for their wings. We tried the barbecue and it had some kick to it. Chill place to chill on a patio late night til midnight. Their happy hour starts at 10!

  • *****

The Ellis is at a pretty good location, away from all the busy beach cluster but close enough to have a breezy walk there and enjoy the beach without worrying about finding parking.

The restaurant is clean and the service is good. The foods are pretty good with the usual Western dishes. I had the bison burger and it came with a side choice between salad or fries. The food was quite delicious and the portion was generous.

Overall, the place left a good impression, but I was hoping that there would be may be more inventive and unique comfort foods here. If in the area, I wouldn't mind coming back again and give their menu another try!

  • *****

Tucked away off of the intense beaten path of Kitsilano, lies this great place. As someone who really liked enjoyed the space formerly as the Sunset Grill, I was a bit skeptical at first but was quickly proven wrong. The food and the service are everything a local eatery and pub should be - inviting, delicious and unpretentious. I love the wings with the fiery house-made hot sauce. The grilled octopus is some of the best I've ever had. The veggie burger is delicious (also made in house). If you want something authentic, delicious and laid back, go here - Kevin will take care of you.

Alongside many of the restaurants in the West End and within a walking distance from Kitsilano beach sits one of the newer gastropubs, The Ellis. What lead us to The Ellis was Vanfoodster's Burger Challenge and we figured why not go for a whole meal? This was a big deal for me because if it was not for the burger challenge, I most likely would not have given this restaurant a try since I am neither the type to head to a bar or gastropub for snacks or a meal. When we walked in, I was impressed by the interior and atmosphere. The restaurant looked chic, bougie and literally what you would find if you Googled gastropub.

    TOGARASHI SPICED WINGS ($12.00).
We started off with a bowl of perfectly fried wings. Crispy, juicy, and the skin was well rendered. The wings were on the lighter tasting side however and could have used some more togarashi and flavour in my opinion, but nevertheless still perfectly fried.

    VEGETABLES ($7.00).
Next up was an amazing bowl of vegetables. Seasoned with roasted garlic chilli and lemon, the caramelized broccoli and cauliflower exhibited a nice crunch and the Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly. There was so much flavour in this bowl!

    GRILLED OCTOPUS ($13.00).
Continuing with the theme of perfect vegetables, these were nicely charred as well and tasted great. As for the octopus, it was a touch on the softer side. Not mushy, but very soft and lacked that nice chewiness and snap. However there was plenty of spice, tang and creaminess from the chorizo buttermilk sauce.

    THE MEDITERRANEAN ($17.00).
Now for the main purpose, the entry for the burger challenge was one pork and one beef patty on a poppy seed brioche with roasted peppers and onions, ricotta and provolone cheese, pickled chilies and dried tomatoes. The fresh and soft poppy seed brioche held the burger well and captured all the meaty juices from the beef. The beef patty exhibited a nice char and the roasted peppers, pickled chillies and provolone were a great addition, but we could have done without the pork as it was dry.

    POUND O' MUSSELS ($18.00) AND FRIES ($4.00).
Every order of a burger or sandwich comes with a side of fries, which were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The fries soaked up the double smoked bacon, talisman ale, butter and winter herbs broth well despite that the beer was not fully cooked down. In addition, the buttery and tender mussels were a touch overcooked and not juicy.

    HICKORY SMOKED SIDE RIBS ($25.00).
Last up was my favourite item from the evening, their signature (declared by me) house smoked hickory side ribs! We could smell the smokiness from across the room before the ribs arrived at the table. The barbecue sauce was filled with spices and was not too sweet while the ribs were tender and still meaty, they had bite. The ribs also came with more of those crispy fries, fresh coleslaw and a side of the addicting barbecue sauce with layers of flavours.

    BEIGNETS ($10.00).
For dessert we ordered a plate of mini beignets and tried all the sauces, berry, peanut butter, chocolate and lemon curd. All the sauces were point on and did not taste overly sweet. Moreover, the light and fluffy beignets resembled Chinese egg puffs and were a touch wet inside, but still good.

The Ellis overall served well executed food especially for a gastropub. I mean, the food was better than many restaurants I have been to and the ribs are my definition of perfection. The hickory smoked ribs are definitely one of my Top 3 Best Ribs in Vancouver.

This was a decent joint. I went for the first time and the service was good for the most part. The location was not in a busy area, but it was a good place to hangout as a pub.

I tried the bison burger and my partner had a chicken burger. They both came with kennebec fries, which were not my favourite as they were thick cut. Nonetheless, they were fresh. The bison burger was alright. The wild boar bacon made it seem appealing, but they should have probably cut out the processed jalapeno cheese sauce as it wasn't appetizing.

I would maybe come back for drinks and happy hour, but it wouldn't be my first pick.

The start of our Vancouver trip was kicked off at this little Kitsilano spot for Saturday brunch. I have to say this quiet little spot almost feels like a hidden secret as the places on Cornwall and 4th Ave are packed. Here, you're close to the beach with easier parking and no wait.

When we arrived on a Saturday noon, their patio was maybe only half filled and the bar was filling up to watch the World Cup on their big screens. The spot is definitely on the industrial rustic trend with it's use of big planks of wood, exposed unpolished raw metal details, and the usual Einstein bulbs. It is a pretty big spot and the tables are nicely spread out. Even if all the tables were taken, there is zero concerns about hitting another table or overhearing their conversation. There was maybe only 4 other tables with us that day and service was friendly and solid. We didnt experience any of the poor service mentioned in other reviews but we also didnt do a dinner.

Their menu is their take on comfort food but with a focus on being locally sourced. So no fake syrups (its real maple syrup) and their eggs are supposed to be free run. It takes all the classic brunch dishes but just does a bit of a twist on it... French Toast gets crusted in Frosted Flake for a sweet crunch addition and then topped with hot crispy chicken. Who needs Chicken and Waffles when you can take it further it Frosted Flake French Toast.

Greens n Grains - A nice light salad that was filled a lot of great vegetables and tons of goat cheese to add a tangy note and a creamy bite. The addition of the grains kept me decently full before heading over to a nearby spot to grab a doughnut. For all those wanting to keep it light or looking more of a vegetarian offering, this would be a great dish. Nicely dressed with a sesame vinaigrette and offering pops of flavour from the goat cheese, fresh peas, and candied pecans... this is a solid salad. 4/5

Fried Chicken on Frosted Flake French Toast - Going to admit that this is just over the top... food coma ready? The fried chicken was a healthy helping that was hot and crispy. A solid fried chicken as it wasn't dried out and seasoned well. You can dip it in the chicken gravy for an extra burst of salt and chicken flavour or go all out and drown it in the maple syrup. As for the french toast, you get 4 good sized pieces that had that extra sweet crunch of the cereal. The custard did soak the bread nicely. I think you didnt really need to add the maple syrup for extra flavour but who can say no to maple syrup. Not this Canadian. 4/5

Solid low key spot with good dishes and easy going staff to give you a nice start to the weekend of good eating. I would recommend giving their brunch a chance and avoid the line ups we saw on 4th street.

Came here for brunch and I liked that it was a large space, and there was no wait. It's right by the beach too. Casual place, super friendly staff, food was quick. I also tried a side of FF French toast which was the best!! I strongly recommend.
Saw some other reviews about their drinks so I tried out the earl gray sour which was good.

Had a wonderful brunch at The Ellis. We came at 11:30am on Saturday and it was pretty quiet, had the choice of our seats.
We ordered the bacon eggs benny and I asked for avocado toast on gluten free bread with eggs over medium. My husband also ordered the beignets for dessert afterwards.
My husband is very picky with his eggs benny and he said this was one of the best! The eggs were poached perfectly, the bacon is organic and thick and the crispy potatoes were perfectly cooked.
My avocado toast was good, nothing extra special I can comment on, but I was very grateful that they had gluten free bread for me. My hubby liked the beignets, nice and fluffy and warm. The drip coffee was nice and strong and our waitress was always around topping it up along with our waters. I would definitely come down here for brunch again! And try the French toast with corn flakes!!!

Amazing staff, amazing food, amazing atmosphere! Shuffle board table, loads of fun. Heated patio!

Absolutely legendary brunch. Great food, wonderful people, Cesars and mimosas did the job too. Thanks!

All in all we will definitely come again and bring friends some friends. The interior has some big group tables, as well as a curling board!

I finally came here after this has been on my list for a year. I came here for brunch finally. I had a ride and my girlfriend who was in town just before the holidays wanted to do brunch and heard that they did frosted flakes/cornflakes french toast. She also wanted some decent brunch spots and another friend of her suggested this place. First of all expect a wait...it is brunch and it seems to be the Vancouver thing to do. My Girlfriend didn't understand that concept and was slightly irritated. Thankfully we were waiting with some awesome people who we started a good conversation with them. The wait was worth it. You have your typical brunch items and some that are outside the box which made me smile. I had the same as her the cornflakes french toast which surprisingly was a good combination, especially with maple syrup. I had eggs soft pouched with toast. Some items are inclusive while others are odd ons. The prices were expensive but for the location and selection it is what is considered to be fair market value. The place was busy but we were served in a timely manner. Our server was super friendly.

We had a large Group if 9 including 4 kids and they accommodated us very nicely. Everyone loved their meals and the desserts were amazing!

dont go to local! This place has the chillest vibe, best food, friendliest staff and best drinks. Good price, happy hour is such a good time and they have a shuffle board!

i got a veggie burger, mushroom poutine and my boyfriend had the beef dip sandwich. We also had 2 beers during happy hour and the bill was under $50... 10/10 would recommend!

What a gem indeed. The Ellis is just off the main strip by the beaches but it was impressive. Lots of space, friendly service, shuffle board, TV with sports...can't ask for more. Their BC draught list was great but the food was what we came for.

We came here for the burgers but I have to tell you, we will come back for that grilled octopus wow!!

  • *****

LOVE the atmosphere of this place! Had amazing drinks and the Brie on bread was so delicious. The almond Chai White Russian is one of the best mixed drinks I've ever had. Super reasonably priced and great food/drinks. Worth coming to if you're in Vancouver!

    Love the brunch menu!

    Quality: 4.5/5
    Taste: flavorful
    Portion: good average
    Service: 5/5
    Price: $$
    Possibility coming back: absolutely

I am it a big fan on going out for brunch since I can make eggs and pancakes at home, so I only brunch on items that I can't make at home, i.e.: deep fried chicken!! But the idea of chicken waffles have been overly circulated.

Ellis has a Deep Fried Chicken French Toast which was not humongous but generously plated with a airy battered fried chicken breast accompanied with two slices of fried French toasts that the rims were dipped with crunchies. Absolutely delicious!! The wonderful combo of sweet and savory with no hint of greasy!

The egg benedict were nicely soft centered with flavorful maple bacon that was not greasy at all. Hash was well seasoned, and hollandaise sauce was fresh~~

Definitely will come back for more!!

Went here for dinner on Friday with my husband and my parents and was extremely impressed with the the food, service, and overall atmosphere!

This is such a fun place and I look forward to visiting again...perhaps for happy hour next time!

So many people have told me I must try The Ellis. The lesson I have learned is that I should have listened much earlier. This gem far exceeded my expectations. Service was courteous and prompt. Our server was well informed of the menu and was happy to make suggestions. We had a couple pints to start and a share plate of the beets. Presentation was beautiful considering this is essentially a gastropub. The beets were cooked perfectly. Following that I had the squash gnocchi and my husband had the salmon. It could have gone either way and considering it's more of a pub I felt especially the salmon was a gamble. Our meals were unreal. I've been raving about the experience all day actually. Everything was cooked and presented to perfection. I've spent significantly more at other restaurants and not had this level of quality. On top of that the ambiance was cozy and casual. We will return for sure.

Really good, well made drinks with great food. Chippies were fluffy and yum. Happy belly.

Dinner at the Ellis was incredible. Cool vibe, great staff, food was mind blowing. I had the veggie burger because it was recommended and hands down the best veggie burgers I have ever tasted.

I also had the wings w maple hoisin we're super tasty, reminded me of Korean chicken back in hawaii!

Also had a great selection of beers. I will be coming back!

Happened across this place while doing my usual yelp round up. I'm glad I did. The sig-0 loves Asian food but does get tired of my constant cry for Asian breakfast lunch and dinner. So when we hang out with his friends they do want to do somewhere more upbeat and pubby. This is where Ellis comes in. I don't enjoy pubs cuz of their cruddy food. But elllis' food is actually good so are their drinks. We had.

Pork rinds - totally cool dish. They were warm and tasted house made. I wonder if pork rinds are just deep fried pork skin? But unique dish. Loved it.

Brie and bread - it's baked Brie. I don't enjoy baked Brie but others seemed to like it fine. Too many nuts though sprinkled on top

Grilled octopus - great! Thumbs up. I am an octo fan and it was quite a well presented dish.

Ellis burger - good burger. Served on brioche with thick cut Fries. Above average for sure. Only wish I could make it to order. But that's BC for you.

Beet salad. Didn't have any as I don't like beets. But companions enjoyed it. Again nicely presented

Soup of the day- I had joked at the end that i wanted chicken noodle soup with rice. By a fun coincidence it was chicken noodle soup sans rice. It was actually very very good. More salt than I would prefer but flavourful. Good chunks of clearly real chicken and noodles that were unique (thick and more firm that expected) and suitable for the soup. I really enjoyed It and will find out what noodles to make at home. If you are a soup for breakfast lu ch and dinner type like me. You'll like their soups.

Had a bunch of drinks. Companions had beer and I had cocktails. Their cocktails are superb. I mean could be in downtown. Whereupon pubs and the counterparts in this area can usually have cactus club level cocktails. Don't get me started about the kegs old fashioned. I had a few on the list and they were all quality.

Okay to sum it up. I wish them well. This street in Kits for whatever reason can be a cheap crowd. I used to live right across the street. And the pickings tend to be pub like cheap food.

This place isn't pricey. But also not on par with the runnings of that neighbourhood. The soup was $7 (well worth it) and the octo was $16 (one tentacle. Also well worth it)

I say to you fellow ex-neighbours. Who can be a bit limited in their food range. Support this place. I don't want to just keep eating bad pub food when I hang out with fiancs friends. I will come here instead.

  • *****

The Ellis is excellent. It has style, gourmet pub food, fantastic beer and drinks, and cool atmosphere. Kits has needed a place this good. Highly recommended.

  • *****

This place has the best caesar I've ever had. It is truly something special. The brunch is also amazing and there is never a line up. Don't bother standing in line at other places nearby like Sophie's or cafe Zen--just go to the Ellis it is much better. The breakfast sandwich is surprisingly good as are the eggs benny. French toast crusted with frosted flakes and served with fried chicken and gravy is also crazy good if you don't plan on eating anything else for the rest of the day. I've also been for dinner and the wings are great too.

  • *****

Came on Friday night with three others. Friendly, prompt service and nice ambiance. Loved the food - good blend of classic pub items (burger, sandwiches, wings) and more interesting stuff (the octopus was delicious - as was the beet salad). Awesome.

  • *****

Best place for a large group and its already nicely renovated. A friend of mine brought me there for a brunch and the food was great.

  • *****

Had brunch this past weekend. What a great place. Food was fresh, thoughtful and full of flavour. Make sure you get the Soda Bread! The portion and pricing was also in sync. Nicely curated selection of beers on tap too. Style & dcor of the room is just right, modern and contemporary but still warm. A couple of TVs at the bar means you can catch the game but they don't impose on the rest of the room - which is nice if you're there for a drink, a snack and a chat with friends or family. I'll be back - could become my new local.

  • *****

Great place to catch the game and have a top notch beer selection, hearty food and appetizers and the brunch and veggie burgers are the best in Vancouver. Sunday roast dinner is another favorite. The best kept secret is the beignets desert with lemon curd or peanut butter mousse.

Half stars needed on Yelp! My actual rating is 4.5 stars. I'm giving five because I have mad respect for a new business adjusting its menu based on the customers desires and needs. My first visit here I thought the menu was a bit out there for Kits. Not terrible just not as user friendly as it could be especially being a pub style restaurant located on a quieter street in competition with many other restaurants. This was my third visit and I got to meet the owner this time. Kevin if I remember correctly. Kevin was friendly and polite and seemed genuinely excited and proud of the changes they have made and The Ellis.

The inside remains the same, beautiful and modern! Nice lighting. Music isn't blaring so conversations are possible. It was on the quieter side when we visited which was perfect for us after attempting Local in October. People summers over go back to your own neighborhoods so I can have my Local back lol. Anyhow, I still believe this venue will be very noisy, like Local, when it's full. Opened ceilings and wood floors don't allow for sound absorption.

Super stoked to say there are happy hours, with food! Go Ellis! This is smart business I commend you. Lovely wine, red and white for $5. This is a nicer wine that what you will get at Brown's or Local. My opinion of course but I am a total wino, straight up! The red is Chamberton red blend. Steamworks Kolch is also on for $4. Check my pics for the happy food. My only suggestion would be to add something healthy to the happy like a veggie and hummus plate or salad rolls. I love to munch while drinking, but I am lady and gotta watch those calories.

The new menu has a lot more options on it. Chicken burger, beef dip, fun salads and the like. You can order 1/2 size of their salads which is smart and awesome. I tried the new Beet and goat cheese salad and it was delicious! I thought it was too small though for$8. The bowl looked half empty. It would be an easy fix to have a bed of simple green underneath to improve the appearance by filling up the bowl, and my tummy. It's grilled beets good to perfection with a wonderful peppery goat cheese that goes together like wine and cheese! Creamy and not too spicy with the perfect kick. Also adorned with candied pecans and pea shoots. My salad was very shy on the shoots. It was ALMOST perfect.

I very much look forward to trying more of the new me

Awesome new restaurant in Kits! Casual environment with an elevated menu, perfect for the Kitsilano crowd! When we went for brunch the other day the service was excellent and each dish was delicious.
While this place is a meat lovers dream, it's super vegetarian friendly as well. This restaurant is a must try!

Great new addition to the neighbourhood. Breakfast was delicious, soda bread, hash, scramble. I came for wings and a crunch salad last week as well - also delicious. I think the wings were garlic lime chilli. Patio and service were an added bonus! Let's keep this place in the hood.

The Sunset Grill has reopened as "The Ellis "with new owners. This place is named after Ellis Island which is where the immigrants first landed in North America seeking new lives. So that being their name, it was cool to meet an Irish bartender and an Australian Server. In fact there were only two or three Canadians in the whole establishment. Totally renovated to a modern open pub style layout. Nice large bar with a large table down the center which would be great for large parties. Two large TV's maybe more going. They removed the upper split level that Sunset had. The floors are wood and the furniture wood. Does seem a bit "hollow" sound wise and I can see it could be very very loud when it's packed. We were greeted at the door by a hostess-classy, and she was friendly with a big smile. Seated on the patio which is usually in the shade so we eventually moved in cause we got cold, which we did. On a hot sunny night it would be the perfect place to spend sometime. Bartender was Conner and he was great, Friendly funny and helpful. We ordered wine, Chambton red blend and that was pretty good and we also Chef's plate. Homemade lemon ricotta spread with the Chef's was amazing. Also came with a generous portion of cured meat, pickled veggies, olives and some other goodies. There wasn't enough bread for all the condiments provided. My suggestion would be more bread or better yet some fresh veggies like celery or cucumber to dip in that lovely Ricotta. I will be going back soon to try more food and I will update the review. Also I hope there is a happy hour soon. Happy hour, happy hour, yes please!

Great food at this new spot in kits, lots of patio spots to tie your dog. Try the garden-burger or brunch! Lots of great booths and tables to accommodate a big group.
